Task 5 notes.

Representation - The way something that is presented by media
This can be:
Gender
Age
Lifestyle
Ethnicity
Class
Communities
Sub-cultures
Ideal lifestyle
Religion

Ideology - a belief system.

Active and passive
There are two school of thoughts
Hypodermic syringe (Theodore Adorno, 1930's) One said that the media is so powerful that the audience has no power of their thoughts and they believe everything that they hear from the media. The media has a negative impact. ( This is passive )

Other school of thought:
The audience are able to filter and adapt to the content that is put in the media ( This is active )

Copycat crime: this is where people copy the violence that they have recently witnessed, this can cause a moral panic.

Representation of men (earp and katz, 1999) - equation of masculinity with pathological control and violence
Alvarado (1987) - ethnicity 'exotic, dangerous, humorous, pitied'.

Legal and ethical.
Legal - copyright infringement? One of the main worries in the film industry is illegal downloading.
Ethical - offensive material? Sensationalism? Censorship - has the film been censored.

Digital Economy Bill.

Ethical:
Its all about morals.
Sensationalism - Exaggerate things that are not really important, used to make a profit.

BBFC - is there for the protection of children from inappropriate content.
How does your film your film keep within the guidelines.

People become used to more violence because of the media so therefore the age ratings of some films are decreased.
